Terms of service.
The short version
- Only message people who agreed to hear from you, and always let them opt out.
- Use a sender ID that belongs to you. No pretending to be a bank, a network or the government.
- Credit is prepaid and never expires. Messages the network fails to deliver are credited back.
- Keep your API keys secret. You're responsible for what's sent with them.
- Break the acceptable use rules and we can stop your sending, without a refund for the misuse.

1. Who we are
Nkra ("we", "us") provides bulk SMS, one-time codes and related messaging services to businesses through our website, dashboard and API (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these terms on behalf of yourself and the business you represent ("you").
Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data and forms part of these terms.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 18 and able to agree to these terms for your business.
- The details you give us, including your business name, email and phone number, must be true and kept up to date.
- Keep your password safe. Everything done through your account or your API keys is treated as done by you.
- Tell us straight away through our support form if you think someone else has access.
3. Consent and opt-outs
You may only send messages to people who have given you clear permission to contact them, or with whom you have an existing relationship where they would reasonably expect the message, as Ghanaian law allows.
- Promotional messages must say who they're from and tell the recipient how to stop them, for example "Reply STOP to opt out".
- When someone asks you to stop, stop within 48 hours and don't message them again for marketing.
- Don't send promotions between 8pm and 7am unless the recipient asked you to.
- You must be able to show us how and when a recipient agreed, if we or a regulator ask.
You are the controller of your recipients' personal data, and you are responsible for having a lawful basis to message them under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
4. Sender IDs
- A sender ID must be your business name, a brand you own, or a name you are clearly authorised to use.
- Sender IDs are reviewed by us and, where required, by the mobile networks. We may refuse or withdraw any sender ID, for example one that is misleading or resembles another organisation's name.
- Approval usually happens within the hour but is not guaranteed. We are not responsible for delays or refusals by the networks.
5. Acceptable use
You must not use the Service to send, or help anyone send:
- messages to people who haven't agreed to receive them (spam), or to bought or scraped number lists;
- fraud, scams or phishing, including fake prizes, fake mobile money reversals and requests for PINs or codes;
- messages that pretend to come from a bank, a mobile network, a payment service, a government body or any person or business you don't represent;
- content about illegal goods or services, unlicensed betting or lending, or anything that breaks Ghanaian law;
- hate speech, threats, harassment, or content that incites violence;
- sexual content, or anything involving children in a harmful way;
- malware, or links that hide where they lead in order to deceive.
You also must not try to get around our limits or security, resell the Service without our written agreement, or use it in a way that harms the networks or our other customers.
We may review messages, sender ID requests and account activity to protect recipients and keep the Service working. If we believe a message breaks this section we may block it, pause your sending, or close your account, and we may report it to the networks or the authorities.
6. Credit, prices and payment
- The Service is prepaid. You buy SMS credit in Ghana cedis through our payment partner Paystack, using mobile money or a card. Prices are shown on our pricing section and in your dashboard.
- One credit sends one part of one SMS. Long messages and messages with special characters use more parts, as explained in our API docs.
- Credit does not expire while your account is open.
- Credit used on a message the network reports as failed, expired or rejected is returned to your balance automatically.
- Otherwise credit is not refundable or exchangeable for cash, except where the law requires it or as set out in section 9.
- We may change prices for future purchases. Credit you have already bought keeps its value.
- If a payment is reversed or charged back, we may remove the matching credit or suspend the account until it's settled.
7. API keys and the sandbox
- Keep live API keys on your own servers. Don't put them in websites, apps or public code. You are responsible for everything sent with your keys until you replace them in the dashboard.
- Sandbox keys are for testing. Messages sent with them are not delivered, and we may limit or reset sandbox use.
- We may limit how fast or how much you can send to protect the Service.
8. Delivery and availability
We pass your messages to the mobile networks through our delivery partners and report back what the networks tell us. Delivery depends on things outside our control, including the recipient's phone, network coverage, and the networks' own filtering. We do not guarantee that any message will be delivered, or delivered by a certain time.
We work to keep the Service available but don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may carry out maintenance, and we may change or stop features, telling you in advance where we reasonably can.
9. Suspension and closing
- You can close your account at any time by contacting us.
- We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if we're required to by law or a regulator, or if your use puts recipients, the networks or the Service at risk.
- If we close your account without you having broken these terms, we will refund your unused credit to the payment method or mobile money number you used, where we can.
- If we close it because you broke section 3, 4 or 5, unused credit is not refunded.
10. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law. Apart from that:
- The Service is provided "as is". We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost business or lost data.
- We are not liable for failures caused by the mobile networks, our payment or delivery partners, or events outside our reasonable control.
- Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the three months before the claim arose.
11. Your responsibility to us
You will cover our reasonable costs, losses and fines if a claim is brought against us because of the messages you sent, the recipients you chose, or your breach of these terms or of the law.
12. Changes and law
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you by email or in the dashboard before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the new terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Ghana, including the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772) and the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038). The courts of Ghana have jurisdiction over any dispute. We'll always try to resolve a problem with you directly first.
